The Bikini Craze 1900-1940's
Bikinis, bikinis and more bikinis! Cultures all over the world can’t get enough of this flesh baring look. From the white hot beaches of Brazil to the west coast surfs of America, the bikini makes an impression wherever it goes.

1950's -Present
The growing beach crowds and backyard pools of the 1950’s truly started a new American pop-culture. Wide spread television access helped to advertise the fun and fashionable style of the bikini, which now included ruffles, stripes and polka dot colors.
With the sexual revolution of the 1960’s, two-piece swimwear became even more daring and flesh revealing. Models and movie stars sported skimpy hip riders, halter tops and tye died patterns.
In the 1970’s, we saw the return of the one piece swimsuit. Sports modeling helped sexy, high cut suits, and metallic colors make their way onto beaches across North America.
The surf culture of the west coast had evolved by the 1980’s to include serious female surfers and water skiers. Surf bikinis and women’s sports cuts began to compete with the girly styled suits of the 60’s.
By the 1990’s, brand names like Speedo had begun to develop a new line of swimwear for women. Breathable halter tops and shorts were more practical for high action women competing in water and beach sports, like volleyball.
Today, bikini fashion is more alive and vibrant than ever. Thong bikinis and string bikinis populate the beaches of Europe and North America, turning heads wherever they go.
